Rocking Chair Priming

Rocking Chair Refinishing Project

PART III.

Whew... after the what seemed like MONTHS of sanding.  Spray priming took me only a matter of minutes.

One can of primer didn't quite finish the job because the underneath part of the seat is totally brown still but I am off to Home Depot this afternoon to get some more and of course that all together lovely.... top coat!

Can't wait to finish this never ending project and put it in the room.

My helper (who will very soon get to enjoy her new chair) and who by the way worried grandparents was very far away in the open breezy, airy yard while I was spraying.  She is a very happy girl.

Sanded Chair

The continuing saga of the never ending rocking chair project.

Part II.

The SANDING!  This was by far the longest and most grueling part.

I was able to remove all of the gold leaf print design and trim as you can see all of the scratches from the seat smoothed out nicely.  I am certain that the legs needed a little bit more but I was so sick and tired of sanding by that point I said enough and primed right over my lightly sanded work.

Rocking Chair Refinishing Project

This is my lovely chair that I got at a yard sale for $20.  What a great find.  It needed a lot of TLC but I am very pleased with it.  I reeked of smoke and was all dinged up... not to mention the leaf/fruit design. Yuck, not my style.

As you can see the seat was in terrible condition so I have sanded and sanded that down and hopefully soon it will be all smoothed out.

In the end it will be white to go with my daughter's room.  But in between screaming kids and diapers and cleaning I have not worked on it as much as I should have.  It is almost finished.  Maybe by the end of this weekend I will have finished it up.

Can't wait to show you the finished product.  I'll save that for another day.  Be sure to check back to see when it is done.

Succulents

I had to leave my beautiful succulent in Phoenix with a friend before we moved.

I have had that little plant for four years and it finally bloomed and was beautiful.  It matched the hand painted pot I had it in perfectly.  I miss beautiful succulents, but I am thrilled to once again be experiencing autumn and looking forward to a garden next year.

Fall

I discovered a new meaning to Fall the other day while enjoying the park with my two little ones and some friends.  We had seen a family of squirrels in a tree and the kids were having a fun time picking up all the acorns at the park and leaving them in a pile at the base of the tree where we knew the squirrels lived.  I had just shown my oldest how a branch from a nearby tree had just fallen in the wind and he went running off to look at it.  We were probably about 30-40 feet from the base of the squirrel's tree at this point and we heard a very large rustling in the branches WAY up above.  Thinking the wind had knocked another branch loose I stepped a few feet to the left and instinctively ducked my head.  A few seconds later, not five feet from where I was standing, a full grown squirrel slammed into the ground right next to me.  It had fallen over 50 feet from the branch.  It wasn't dead, or even stunned because the second that it hit the ground it bolted for the tree trunk.  All the kids were laughing and couldn't believe what happened.  Me, well I'm just glad it didn't land on my head!  Happy Fall!

Beginnings of a mobile

This is the first part of my mobile I made for my son's room many many months ago.  This was just when I was laying it out as a work in progress.  But now that I have a finished project I will have to take some more pictures to show how it turned out.

In case you want to make one yourself the instructions are below each photo.

cut two inch wide strips
Use whatever colors you have available. I used card stock because it is sturdier.  But fabric or construction paper may work as well.
Cut your two inch strips into two in squares.

These were the colors I chose that matched my son's room colors.

When the pieces were all cut out I set everything out and organized it how I wanted.

Next time I will show how I assembled it and the finalized product.

spices

Yuck.  My old spices weren't organized at all.  I had them all thrown together in a desk drawer organizer from Ikea.

They were taking up TONS of shelf space in my very, very small pantry and so I decided to do a spice rack make-over.  I found a spice rack and containers at Goodwill for $6.  After the kids were down for their afternoon naps, two curious cats and I tackled the project.

In the end I think it turned out all right.  It certainly works better, looks better, and takes up way less space.

All in all I am very pleased.  Although at some point I will redo the lables because they are already peeling off at either end.  What projects have you worked on this week?

PHFR

Linking up for my first time with Like Mother, Like Daughter for Thursday's Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real.

Pretty:  This cute little chunker just got her first tooth.  She looks just like her daddy.
Happy:  Two cute babies when they finally play nicely together.  It is tough to keep things calm now that little is crawling around and trying to take toys from big.  She just wants to slobber on them but he thinks she is claiming everything that was once his.  He almost always deems it necessary to take back what was once his even though it hasn't been played with in months.  But I am sure that he will learn to share eventually!
Funny:  See that little hole in the booster-seat-high-chair?  That is where the tray goes when they are little and use a tray.  We took the tray off because he is big enough to eat at the table.  Then I discovered he wasn't eating as much as we thought and apparently he has been stashing food down the hole for a week or so.  Good thing I clean the seat often or it might have been a while before we discovered his little secret.  Good thing ant season is over. YUCK.
The hole.  Perfect for stashing unwanted food.
The nasty stash.
Real:  Usually after bath time this little cutie screams and cries until she is dry, diapered, fed and asleep.  Sometimes the LONG bedtime process is multiple hours of screaming and crying babies.  This time though I captured a smile.

Numero Uno

I've been having so much fun reading blogs I thought I might once again try my hand at blogging.  I am busy, busy, busy with two babies, two cats, a principal husband, and moving once again, but why not blog about it.  I am looking forward to looking back on this one day and remembering how much fun this time in my life was.  It is already speeding by.  A little about me... I love crafts, DIY projects around the house, sewing, baking, sports and all things cats and babies.  Hopefully I am just a normal girl who most people can relate to and enjoy reading about.  Check back often for many more updates and thoughts.
